You will enjoy an unforgettable experience if you start a journey towards Straubing, Tiergarten.
The park is open all year round (in winter some animals cannot be seen due to hibernation and the restaurant is also closed from November to February) and offers you a unique animal experience on barrier-free paths. You can marvel at over 1700 animals (around 200 different species). The park is around 18 hectares in size and has been in operation for over 70 years. A major concern of the zoo is not only your rest and relaxation, you also receive important information about nature and species protection as well as conservation work in cooperation with zoos. You can get a clear map of the enclosures at the ticket office or ask the team at the Bergknappenhof Hotel.
You will find a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Start your tour and learn about the individual animals from the numerous information panels. Stop for a quick bite at the kiosk, which is located close to the large children's playground, petting zoo, and restrooms with a baby changing room. The zoo grounds boast the only replica of a Neolithic farmhouse. It is 36 meters long, 6 meters wide, and 5,25 meters high. Inside, you can see an exhibition on Stone Age craft techniques and the origins of domestic animal breeds. Works of art made from a variety of materials by various artists are scattered throughout the zoo grounds. Right at the entrance, you'll be greeted by the Rieser Owl, an owl weighing approximately 3000 kg and crafted from a single piece of oak. Various steel sculptures and stone figures complete the picture. Straubing Zoo participates in the EEP, the European Endangered Species Programme. Unfortunately, many animal species are threatened with extinction, mostly because of humans. Many zoos are committed to promoting the breeding of such animals and saving these species. Look for the EEP logo on the enclosures as you tour the zoo. You can reach the zoo from the Bergknappenhof wellness hotel in about an hour.
