You will enjoy an unforgettable experience if you start a journey towards Straubing, Tiergarten.

The park is open all year round (in winter some animals cannot be seen due to hibernation and the restaurant is also closed from November to February) and offers you a unique animal experience on barrier-free paths. You can marvel at over 1700 animals (around 200 different species). The park is around 18 hectares in size and has been in operation for over 70 years. A major concern of the zoo is not only your rest and relaxation, you also receive important information about nature and species protection as well as conservation work in cooperation with zoos. You can get a clear map of the enclosures at the ticket office or ask the team at the Bergknappenhof Hotel.

You will find a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Start your tour and find out about the individual animals on the numerous boards. Stop for a quick break at the kiosk, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the large children's playground, the petting zoo and the toilet with a baby changing room. The only replica of a Neolithic farmhouse is on the zoo grounds. It is 36m long, 6m wide and 5,25m high. There is an exhibition on Stone Age craft techniques and the origins of domestic animal breeds. Works of art made from a variety of materials by various artists are spread throughout the zoo grounds. The Rieser owl, an owl weighing around 3000 kg and made from a single piece of oak, greets you right at the entrance. Various steel sculptures and stone figures complete the picture. The Straubing Zoo is taking part in the EEP, the so-called European Endangered Species Programme. Unfortunately, many animal species are threatened with extinction, mostly because of humans. Many zoos are trying to promote the breeding of such animals and to save these species. When you go on a tour, pay attention to the EEP-Logo on the enclosures. You can reach the zoo from the Bergknappenhof wellness hotel in about an hour.
