Glass barn in Viechtach

A trip to the Glass Barn, which is close to the Bergknappenhof wellness hotel, is extremely worthwhile. As the name suggests, this is a former barn that the artist Rudolf Schmid senior transformed into a work of art with the help of his family. Huge glass walls are decorated with different stories. For example, you can see various paintings about the Rauhnacht or about Mühlhiasl, an alleged soothsayer and prophet, the forest prophet of the Bavarian Forest.

You will also find paintings that tell of St. Francis or Robber Heigl. Robber Heigl was also a figure from the Zeller Valley, who is said to have caused mischief as far as Viechtach and Landshut. Guests of the Bergknappenhof Hotel will also be interested in the Glass Road Jubilee Sculpture in the outdoor area, which makes a hugely impressive impression at 8 m. You will find more sculptures in the garden.

Other themes of the unique, impressive paintings are Austen - the life of a glass refiner from the Sudetenland or the glassworks ghost Durandl. The Glass Barn is open from April to October, from 10:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. and from May to September from 10:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. Unfortunately it is closed in the winter months because the barn cannot be heated sufficiently and is therefore used as a warehouse. You can reach the Glass Barn from the Wellness Hotel Bergknappenhof via Drachselsried and Neunußberg in just 24 minutes. Guided tours can be arranged in groups and last between 45 and 60 minutes. Individuals can also book a spontaneous tour, which lasts around 20 minutes. Luckily, the tour does not cost anything in addition to the normal entrance fee. You will be impressed by the uniqueness of the architecture. Adults only pay €6 entry, young people aged 10 to 17 pay €3 and children up to the age of nine accompanied by an adult are even free.
