Further Drachenstich in the Upper Palatinate
Are you spending your summer holiday at the Wellness Hotel Bergknappenhof?
Then you should definitely take the 45-minute drive and visit the Drachenstich Festival. The play, staged by director Alexander Etzel-Ragusa since 2006, is probably the oldest folk play in Germany. Put simply, the play is about the battle of good against evil. The historical story from the Middle Ages is extremely impressive due to the interplay of reality and myth. The dragon, a horrific monster, is said to bring death and destruction. Only the lady of the castle of Furth and Knight Udo, the fearless, can stop the dragon. The play looks back on a tradition of around 500 years, but since Ragusa it has been seen in a new version that will captivate, fascinate and take you back to the Middle Ages. The highlight for guests of the Bergknappenhof Hotel is certainly seeing the dragon. The dragon weighs 11 tons, is 15,50 m long, 3,80 m wide and 4,50 m high. Its wingspan is 12 m. Local companies such as Zollner Elektronik, but also Audi and the German Aerospace Center were involved in the development and production of the dragon. The four-legged walking robot is even in the Guinness Book of Records. Immerse yourself in the world of the Middle Ages. In the historical parade you will see 1400 participants in original costumes, medieval wagons, cannons, horses and much more. You will be enchanted by a bygone world. The festival in Furth also offers an attraction for the young guests of the Bergknappenhof wellness hotel. The children's festival! Here children aged four to twelve perform the children's dragon stabbing. Afterwards the little ones can slip into costumes, shoot crossbows, buy wooden swords or have a bite to eat in the dragon cafe. The Cace Gladium has a special charm; here sword fights are held, embedded in a backdrop of over 100 market stalls, with natural products for everyday life or replicas of medieval equipment or jewelry.
