Excursion destinations for the whole family in the Bavarian Forest
When you stay at the Hotel Bergknappenhof, you will find yourself in the middle of the Bavarian Forest, a low mountain range around 100 km long and 1456 m high, on the border between the Czech Republic and Bavaria. You will be staying in Lower Bavaria, with the Bavarian Forest in the north belonging to the Upper Palatinate and in the south even reaching the border of Upper Austria. Geologically, the Bavarian Forest is part of the Bohemian Forest, the highest mountain range in the Bohemian Massif.
The Bavarian Forest has been distinguished from the Bohemian Forest since 1830, when the area became Bavarian with the incorporation of the Bishoprics of Regensburg and Passau. The area along the Czech border is a national park, with a large number of hiking trails, some of which extend beyond the border to the larger Bohemian Forest National Park (Sumava). Hikes in the Bavarian Forest can be undertaken, for example, on the Grosser Arber (1456 m), Grosser Rachel (1453 m), Osser (1293 m) or Falkenstein (1315 m). The area between Lusen and the Grosser Falkenstein is the Bavarian Forest National Park. Here you are surrounded by "primeval forest", small lakes and rain moors.
All of these hiking routes are just a stone's throw away from the Bergknappenhof wellness hotel. The Bavarian Forest was already known to Aristotle, Caesar and Tacitus in Celtic and Roman times. Salt production and later glassworks were important for the Bavarian Forest. The district town of Deggendorf is called "the gateway to the Bavarian Forest". The Bavarian Forest is drained mainly by the Regen and Ilz rivers via the Danube and by the Moldau via the Elbe.
Originally, the name Bavarian Forest only applied to the Vorderer Wald between the Danube and Regen, but today it also includes the Hinterer Wald, i.e. the mountains Großer Arber, Rachel, Lusen, with the towns of Viechtach, Regen, Zwiesel, and Grafenau, Freyung and Waldkirchen to the east. The "Woid", as the locals affectionately call it, is known for nature, hiking, forestry culture, ski areas, glassblowing and geosciences through the Wettzell fundamental station near Bad Kötzting.
